In the next few days (17 to 19 July) you'll have three chances to  
catch multi-media puppet theater in Cottage Grove about Opal  
Whiteley. (See forwarded announcement below.)

Opal Whiteley (1897 - 1992) is one of the most famous authors and  
historic personalities to emerge from Lane County.

Like another of Lane County's most famous authors and personalities  
(Ken Kesey), Opal had a remarkably close connection to issues  
involving "madness" and the mental health system. Opal ended up  
spending decades in a psychiatric institution until her death.

If you don't know the story of Opal Whiteley just google her name  
(note the extra 'e' in her last name). You'll find Opal's remembered  
by many, including in a special web site by the University of  
Oregon's Steve Williamson:

editor of the Cottage Grove Sentinel during Opal's years of fame.

prodigy actress. Come check out Maya playing the legendary Opal
