Brief biography:

Lauren Tenney (34), a psychiatric survivor, grew up in the
psychiatric system in New York City. She is currently:

* chair of the board of directors of the Mental Patients Liberation
Alliance.

* adjunct professor of psychology at the College of Staten Island

* a doctoral student at the City University of New York's Graduate
Center in the Environmental Psychology program

Topics will include:

Mad Pride - Bastille Days '06: Hear about the campaign and protests
in New York State to defend children from abuse by the mental health
system. Over 1,000 petitions were turned into the Office of Mental
Health to stop the use of shock on children

Mad History: Lauren is studying a psychiatric survivor newsletter
from the 1800's called _The Opal_. She has access to ten volumes of
this publication that was written and edited by the inmates of Utica
State Lunatic Asylum from 1851 to 1860. Lauren will talk about how
this history project is based on a new academic idea of
"participatory action research" (PAR), where the community of
psychiatric survivors has a voice in the study's direction and use.
