From mindfreedom-news at intenex.net Fri Jul 3 18:32:47 2009 From: mindfreedom-news at intenex.net (News and alerts from www.MindFreedom.org) Date: Fri, 3 Jul 2009 16:32:47 -0700 Subject: NEWS: Independent from Inhumane Mental Health Care? Message-ID: 4th of July 2009 -- MindFreedom International News Release http://www.mindfreedom.org/directory -- please forward now! DECLARATION OF MIND INDEPENDENCE! Declare Your Mind Independent from Inhumane Mental Health Care! MindFreedom International Launches Directory of Alternatives. A Call for Mental Health Alternative Providers to List Their Services! MindFreedom International announced today the much-anticipated launch of its MindFreedom Directory of Mental Health Alternatives, and is issuing an international call for services that would like to be listed. To try out the geographically-searchable directory, which already lists a few alternatives, go to the Directory Gateway: http://www.mindfreedom.org/directory MindFreedom's new directory is unique in that every provider listed has agreed to uphold key principles on such issues as the use and discontinuation of psychiatric drugs, the "biomedical model," and forced treatment. The principles were devised by the the MindFreedom International Choice in Mental Health Care Committee, and endorsed by the MindFreedom International board of directors. The text of the MindFreedom Principles for Mental Health Alternatives is BELOW. The Directory will be international in scope and draw upon MindFreedom's allies in many countries. MindFreedom board member Matthew Morrissey, who is a mental health counselor, stated, "An important new component to MindFreedom's work of promoting human rights in the mental health system is to build an extensive network of practitioners and agencies who fundamentally respect the dignity and resiliency of the people they serve." While the idea for a directory is not new, the goal of creating it was officially proposed and discussed at the Wisdom House Conference on Alternatives in July of 2007. There, the conference attendees helped brainstorm the broad outlines of the project. Thanks to the generous donations of MindFreedom members, enough funds were raised to build a customized database. MindFreedom's web master NetCorps encountered technical difficulties with the custom database, but work was completed in June 2009. July is widely considered "Mad Pride Month," so organizers consider this is an especially appropriate month for the public launch. Providers of services who agree with the MindFreedom Directory of Alternatives Principles, and who would like to apply to be listed in the directory, may inquire here: creativerevolution at mindfreedom.org The "Gateway" page to the directory has links to the search engine, principles and this news release with a photo of Matt Morissey speaking at a recent protest in front of the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting: http://www.mindfreedom.org/directory ~~~~~~~~~~~~ MindFreedom Principles for Mental Health Alternatives We in MindFreedom envision a world where many useful, humane, empowering and competing models replace the dominance of the bio- medical model -- where the resultant flourishing of services, groups, philosophies, and products allows for a genuine freedom to choose. In order to be listed in our planned directory, all individuals, groups, and agencies must agree to uphold certain principles. These principles set them apart from traditional services. ON PSYCHIATRIC DRUGS Our practitioners, groups, and agencies . . . ** Respect the rights of people to make an informed choice about psychiatric drugs and treatment. This includes making available to people unbiased information on the risks and side effects of any treatments and services. ** Offer support and encouragement for people to discuss the side effects of psychiatric drugs. If necessary, they will offer to advocate for them with the prescribing physician. ** Never pressure people into taking psychiatric drugs OR into getting off them. Services are never contingent on a person being "med- compliant" (i.e., "I/we will only treat you, offer you shelter, or allow you to participate in the program if you are on/stay on your medications."). ** Respect the right of people to want to discontinue using psychiatric drugs. If it is within their scope of practice and the person desires it, they will aid the person getting off drugs to taper off the drugs in the safest way possible. If it is not within their scope of practice, they will proactively seek resources and practitioners who will aid them in this process. ON THE BIO-MEDICAL MODEL OF "MENTAL ILLNESS" Our practitioners, groups, and agencies. . . ** Do not tell people that they suffer from irreversible genetic and biochemical abnormalities. Instead, they believe that recovery, growth, and change are extremely probable, especially given the right conditions. ** Understand and are highly sensitive to the effects and implications of diagnosing someone with a psychiatric disorder. ** Do not use psychiatric diagnoses as the primary way of understanding and relating to people. ** Are willing to have an open, collaborative dialogue about the diagnosis if one must be given for insurance or other purposes. ON FORCED TREATMENT Our practitioners, groups, and agencies. . . ** Recognize and uphold the rights of people to conduct their lives free from coercive treatments. ON HONORING OUR KNOWLEDGE Our practitioners, groups, and agencies. . . ** Collaborate with people they serve on the desired outcomes from the service or product. ** Allow people to make their own choice as to when to leave the service or discontinue using the product. Our agencies. . . ** Grant the people whom they serve an active role in shaping agency policy. ON DISCRIMINATION Our practitioners, groups, and agencies. . . ** Do not discriminate on the basis of race, gender, age, religion, sexual preference, disability, etc. ON RESPECT Our practitioners, groups, and agencies. . . ** Prevent the sexual, physical, verbal, or emotional abuse of people served. ** Preserve the mental and physical integrity of people served. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Are you a mental health care provider who agrees with the above principles? MindFreedom reports on Mad Pride '09 celebrations throughout the world, including Ireland, New York, Toronto, Oregon and others. Heard of Gay Pride? MAD PRIDE celebrates everyone's "creative maladjustment" as Martin Luther King, Jr. so often proudly described his own psychological state. Every month is Mad Pride Month, but especially July! The 2009 Mad Pride celebration in Toronto will be a whole week long. The celebration in Ghana last year had over 6,000 people. But small or large, all Mad Pride events count! On 15 July, a national TV news show is interviewing MindFreedom director David Oaks for a later special segment on MAD PRIDE, stay tuned! Mad Pride events in 2009 come on the heels of two major media articles over this past year on Mad Pride: One was in Newsweek in May 2009 -- http://www.newsweek.com/id/195694 . Last May there was even a Mad Pride article in the "Fashion" section of The New York Times -- http://tinyurl.com/nytimes-madpride. Mad's in style. Last month, Canadian radio station CHLY did a four-segment special on MAD PRIDE, including an interview with Ruth Ruth, chair of the MindFreedom International Mad Pride Campaign Committee. (Bastille Day has been a traditional day of protest by psychiatric survivors for decades, at the suggestion of MindFreedom member Myra Kovary, thus leading to the designation of July as Mad Pride month!) Info: http://tinyurl.com/albany-09 TORONTO: Mad Pride is coming to Toronto! Again! The City of Toronto has officially proclaimed July 13 to 19, 2009 as Mad Pride Week! This is a week long festival of free arts, education and heritage activities which engages in community development, raises rights awareness and celebrates the lives of persons who have been impacted by the mental health system. The official opening is on Tuesday July 14 at 11 am with The Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, The Honourable David Onley, Ontario Human Rights Chief Commissioner Barbara Hall, Member of Provincial Parliament Cheri Dinovo, Toronto City Councillor Gord Perks, and other invited guests. The challenge was to "make a hat -- the 'madder' the better." Mad competitors used whatever they had at your disposal: found objects, recycled objects, buttons, cloth, paper ... the limits only existed in their imagination. The only rule was: "HAVE FUN". Maybe your community group could hold a Mad Hatter competition? On a sad but resilient note, MindFreedom received news today that long- time member, supporter, dissident psychologist, author, diagnosed "schizophrenic," and psychiatric survivor Al Siebert, PhD of Portland, Oregon died after a long illness, at the age of 75. Al was widely considered, including by many 9/11 survivors, to be a foremost leader on resiliency. Al considered a diagnosis of "schizophrenia" to be a sign that one may be more resilient than "normal." It was not well known that Al had, as a grad student, been diagnosed schizophrenic and escaped from his psychiatric institution. He went on to a long and successful career as psychologist, lecturer and author. To read Al's obituary see, and find a link to a MindFreedom interview with Al, see: http://www.mindfreedom.org/kb/in-memoriam/al-siebert-obituary Thank you, Al Siebert! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MINDFREEDOM 2009 SUMMER SUPPORT DRIVE Unite to Change Mental Health Care! A war of words between the Cambridge police, a Harvard professor and President Obama. Distracted by the frenzy, much of the media missed how President Obama ended his day: Signing a global UN treaty to protect the human rights of people with disabilities. Along with many others, MindFreedom played a role in crafting the treaty inside the United Nations. Here's the MindFreedom News Release: ~~~~~~~~~~~~ 24 July 2009 -- http://www.mindfreedom.org MINDFREEDOM INTERNATIONAL NEWS RELEASE: MindFreedom International Thanks President Obama for Support of UN Treaty on Disability and Human Rights President Obama marked the 19th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act by instructing UN Ambassador Susan Rice to sign an historic United Nations "convention" or treaty next week on disability and human rights, joining 140 other nations. "It's the first new human rights convention of the 21st century," Obama said at in the White House East Room. MindFreedom International -- uniting a broad constituency of mental health consumers, psychiatric survivors, mental health professionals, advocates and others concerned with fighting for human rights in the mental health system -- praised President Barack Obama's announcement about signing the UN International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Celia Brown, MFI Board president, led a team of MindFreedom members inside the United Nations during years of meetings to create the treaty. Celia has been widely praised by cross-disability leaders for her warm and inclusive community-building at the UN. Said Celia, "We appreciate that the President is fulfilling the commitment he made to the Convention during his campaign. His leadership indicates that human rights can be a cornerstone for people with disabilities in the United States and around the world. "The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities represents a paradigm shift of understanding disability from a medical model to a social model. The CRPD recognizes the key principles of non- discrimination, freedom to make one's own decisions, and to have the opportunity to be actively involved in policies that effect our lives." The MindFreedom International UN Team participated in UN meetings with a diverse alliance of leaders from disability organizations including the International Disability Caucus (now the International Disability Alliance), CRPD Forum and World Network of Users and Survivors of Psychiiatry. MindFreedom International was instrumental in conducting workshops during the UN convention negotiations to educate people with disabilities and governments on the perspectives of human rights of users/survivors of psychiatry. David Oaks, Director of MindFreedom International, and a board member of the United States International Council on Disability (USICD), said, "We look forward to the Senate reviewing the treaty for ratification as a significant step to winning human rights for the 650 million people in the worldwide disability community." Judy Heumann, former Clinton Administration appointee, board member of USICD, and participant in the negotiations to draft the treaty, said, "This treaty reflects the unique insights of disabled people from around the world. The participation of disabled people in decision- making about policies affecting our lives is changing the way we are regarded in our communities and by our governments," Susan Rice, the United States State Ambassador to the UN, will officially sign the Convention on the Rights of Persons wih Disabilities on July 30, 2009 at the UN Headquarters on July 30, 2009 in New York City.
