Title: Globalization of the Mental Health Industry: The View from
India's Psychiatric Survivors.
Who:
Bhargavi Davar, PhD of Pune India.
Dr. Davar is an advisor on the new Global Disability Rights Fund. Dr.
Davar is the Founder of Bapu Trust, a mental health organization
named after her mother, which is based in Pune, India. She has
published extensively on the subject of women and mental. Since 1998
Bhargavi Davar has engaged in networks with psychiatric survivor
perspectives in mental health, especially the care and treatment
rights and civil liberties of persons, especially women, with a
psychiatric disability. At present, Bhargavi Davar is Director,
Center for Advocacy in Mental Health, which is a sponsor group in
MindFreedom International.
Followed by community discussion moderated by David W. Oaks,
Director, MindFreedom International.
Where: Eugene Public Library, Bascom-Tykeson Room - please arrive
early, capacity is 100.
Why:
Over the next decade or two, MindFreedom International estimates that
the Western mental health system may be reaching as many as 100
million new customers in poor and developing countries.
What are the implications of massive psychiatric drugging, labeling
and electroshock, without access to humane alternatives, full
information or advocacy?
What would be a more empowering path for mental and emotional well
being as the mental health industry globalizes?
Dr. Davar is on the front lines of the effort to address these
concerns from her organizational location in Pune, India, and her new
position in the launch of the Global Disability Rights Fund, which
brings her to the USA.
Wheelchair accessible.
