This employment opportunity is with Oregon State Hospital, which is
part of the Department of Human Services (DHS). There are two full-
time openings in Work Administration located in Salem. One of these
positions involves weekly travel to the OSH Portland campus to work
once a week. These positions are represented by a union.
This recruitment announcement will be used to establish a list of
qualified candidates to fill the current vacancy and may be used to
fill future vacancies as needed.
INTRODUCTION
DHS is a large, diverse organization with multiple goals and
exceptionally broad department-wide programs. DHS aspires to have a

The Oregon State Hospital (OSH) provides psychiatric evaluation,
diagnosis, and treatment for mentally and emotionally ill adult
specialty populations from throughout the state. Inpatient services
are currently licensed at 681 beds on 19 hospital units and
residential services at 96 beds on 3 units. OSH also offers
community outreach services, specialized evaluations, and has a
consumer support office.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's or higher degree in Social Work/Human Services, or related
field; OR
Bachelor's degree in a field not closely related (to Social Work/
Human Services) and one year of human services related experience
(i.e., work providing assistance to individuals and groups with
issues such as economically disadvantaged, employment, abuse and
neglect, substance abuse, aging, disabilities, health, cultural
competencies, inadequate housing).
NOTE: Preference may be given to candidates with experience as a
mental health consumer and in Mental Health Advocacy Activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Recovery Specialist works hospital-wide to provide support to
patients and help them understand and implement their own recovery.
This will include outreaching to patients and helping them understand
recovery concepts and wellness. At times, the Recovery Specialist
will be an advocate for patients. The Recovery Specialist will carry
out these functions through group and individual work. Major duties
include:
Recovery and Peer Support: Work with peers to develop relationships
that are respectful, mutually responsible and potentially
transforming with the intention of changing unhelpful patterns and
developing wellness and responsible patterns. Model recovery. Be
available for support and to listen to peers concerns. Work with
peers to help create a safe environment. Assist peers to identify
hopes, dreams and ambitions.
Advocacy: Work with peers for their personal and group interests.
Individual work may include providing support to deal with treatment
team issues, personal goals, or referral to someone else who may be
able to meet a specific need. Group advocacy would include improving
environmental conditions, privileges, policies, and rules.
Direct Services: Accompany peers on structured outings, educate them
to internal and external systems, debrief and explain from a recovery
perspective. Lead or co-lead recovery based groups. Help peers
develop assertiveness skills and self-advocacy.
Outreach: Meet new peers admitted to Oregon State Hospital and
explain the peer support program. Seek out peers in the hospital and
encourage them to take advantage of peer support.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Works closely with psychiatric patients and must be competent to deal
with their unique needs. Daily contact with psychiatric patients who
are mentally, emotionally and/or behaviorally disabled, including
those how may be assaultive or aggressive.
Works Independently. Work hours subject to change with little
notice. May be required to work hours that exceed regular schedule,
i.e. a double shift or a different shift in addition to regular
schedule.
Travel. You must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable
driving record. If not, you must be able to provide an alternate
method of transportation.
